First-Day Operations Setup Checklist

A first-day setup should establish safe ownership, data boundaries, and a short list of verified next decisions. Avoid treating a checklist as proof that a system is configured or ready for production use.

Scope note: This is a vendor-neutral checklist. It does not claim that any product offers an account, dashboard, setup flow, scheduling, dispatch, customers, invoices, communications, AI, integrations, pricing, security, or outcomes.

Establish accountable ownership

Name who owns the setup, which decisions need approval, what information may be entered, and the conditions that require a pause.

Start with synthetic, minimum-scope records

Do not enter real customer, employee, supplier, payment, address, schedule, account, credential, token, internal-link, screenshot, log, or attachment data while a workflow is still being tested.

Use fictional names and generic roles only.

Confirm the basic control points

Area Question before proceeding
Access Who is authorized and how is access removed?
Data What minimum information is necessary?
Workflow What requires human review?
Error handling How is an incorrect record corrected?
Escalation Who decides when information is incomplete?

Separate setup from real-world proof

A configured field, visible record, automated status, message, or report is not proof of a customer agreement, booked job, completed work, invoice, payment, collected cash, security control, or business result.

Set the next review

Assign a private review date for access, data quality, exceptions, authorization, and correction paths before any production use.

Discussion

Which first-day setup decision is risky enough to require a second human review?
